ATTENTION: Parents of students going to Secondary school!

Take a moment to think about starting secondary school and the following statements. Using a scale from 1 to 5, rate how confident you are feeling about your child’s ability in the following scenarios at Secondary School next year, with ‘1’ being you’re ‘not confident at all’  and ‘5’ being you’re ‘extremely confident’ in their abilities.

  • Introducing themselves to new people
  • Making new friends
  • Organising their belongings (including text books, stationary etc.) for multiple classes at once
  • Interpreting and following a school timetable
  • Using effective organisational strategies to keep track of their homework, assignments and assessments
  • Asking for help when they need it, and knowing who to ask
  • Coping in stressful situations

Now that you have made a mental note of your own ratings, why don’t you ask your child how confident they are feeling about these scenarios?

How did you go? Are you feeling more confident about your child’s transition to Secondary School…or are you starting to wonder about how your child is going to cope with such a significant milestone?

If it’s the latter, please don’t worry. You are not alone.

With only one more term left before your child leaves Primary School for good, now is the time to really start thinking about how you can support your child in feeling as prepared and confident as possible for Year Seven. We cannot stress enough the importance of getting organised NOW, and ensuring that you have an open dialogue with your child’s new school about their transition.

Many children with additional needs, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Anxiety, are able to make positive and successful transitions to Secondary School. BUT these students often need some extra support to help make all of the stars align.

If you want to help your child towards achieving a positive and successful start to Year Seven but you’re not sure where to start, please talk to your Occupational Therapist about your concerns.

We will be running our ‘Moving On, Stepping Up to Secondary School’ group program over November and December of this year. Our program is specifically designed to provide your child with the skills and knowledge they need to maximise their ability to have a positive and successful start to year seven.

Let us help you, and your child, feel more confident about their transition to Secondary School. If you believe that your child will benefit from participating in our ‘Moving On, Stepping Up to Secondary School’ group program, please register your interest in the group by calling Sprout NOW on 5975 9197. Places are limited to ensure that we can meet each individual participants needs.
